Imagine entering a music store with no posters of rock or pop stars on the walls and no music playing , the atmosphere is sure not encouraging at all to make purchases there. The store would surely run out of business very soon. This indicates that atmosphere and shop design is very important in retailing. You enter a discount store and it is most normal to find the best deals being posted somewhere here or there and the continuously hearing them on the loudspeakers.
Considering a store selling suits and other classical clothes, the atmosphere would be very calm and appealing to the prospective customers, such a store being very loud and displaying very bright colors will not attract people who will find it a mismatch to the store's speciality.
Fast food retailers selling Chinese food will make use of Chinese decorations to make the customers feel they are at the right place with all the Asian layout to tell the customers that here we are really in Chinese food.
How can you imagine entering a store which has only shelves and no decoration at all, with an ambiance which will make you feel as if you are going back in time?
Most retailers, not to say all capitalize on this fact to bring in as many consumers as possible. They spend much money in trying to create an atmosphere the consumer will find himself very at ease.
However, even if a retail shop might be well decorated and have an appropriate atmosphere, it is primordial to accompany it with good layout and design. It is almost impossible for a person who enters a supermarket to find, say, milk laid out on the shelves of different sections of the supermarket. This is simply not done since this would mean that the shopper will not be able to go through the different brands at the same time, thus making it difficult for him to make his purchase.
It is most common to find music playing in every store you step into, they use this strategy to make you feel at ease and purchase anything. The shops try to have every item to please the different taste of customers, who will definitely be more likely to make their purchases their.
At times, many retailers when trying to create a good atmosphere overdo it, this is almost same as though having dull atmosphere. It will drive away customers. Retailers need to find the right balance when making their stores livelier. This will certainly make customers feel that they have chosen the right place.
