You can sum up the keys to a good Fourth of July barbecue in three words: Food, fun and fireworks. Depending on where you live and what you and your friends and family like to do, the particulars could vary, but the midsummer seasonal fun these events can bring will involve these few main considerations:
1. Food
Any summer barbecue will need some thought to the menu. It helps to have an outdoor grill that is capable of handling the traffic that your party will generate, but this needn't limit you. If you need to you can have a friend help cook the meat elsewhere, or even cater it professionally.
It is traditional for the host of a barbecue to provide the meat and a few main dishes, but guests normally expect to bring something. To help balance the offerings you can give assignments, breaking it down into appetizers, sides and desserts. If you wish, you can also request hamburger garnishes or beverages, though these are also traditionally provided by the host.
2. Fun
It is always nice to organize social and recreational activities. If you have the space, it is excellent to plan a volleyball game or croquet match. If you have a large crowd this will help to control the line for the food. Water games are or swimming are fun for children if there is hot weather (start filling those balloons early in the day!) and having lots of balls or hoola hoops on hand will go over well for makeshift play.
Depending on where you live you will want to have a contingency plan for the weather. Games can be planned for indoors, and everyone loves a songfest indoors or out if you know someone who plays the guitar. This might be a controversial suggestion, but having a big screen T.V. with the day's sports event might ensure a better turnout.
3. Fireworks
It is often nice to plan your barbecue at a time of day so that your guests can transition seamlessly to any fireworks that are planned in your area. If there aren't any, you can host your own - but be mindful of state regulations because no one will want their party remembered by the authorities showing up.
In short, it doesn't take much to host a successful barbecue with good friends gathered at a on a nice summer afternoon. But being heedful of just these few tips can help ensure that your event goes off with a bang.
