Biography: Frank Lloyd Wright

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

The very talented and admired Frank Lloyd Wright was born on June 8, 1867 in Richland Center, Wisconsin. He was actually born Frank Frank Lincoln Wright, and changed his name to Frank Lloyd Wright to honor his mothers Welsh heritage after his parents divorce. He was born to William Carey Wright and Anna Lloyd Jones and was the first born for them. They did have two more children both girls, so Frank was the only boy in the family. Both of his parents were teachers, his dad a music teacher and his mom a county school teacher.

When he was born his mother knew he would grow up to do "beautiful things" as she stated. As a teacher she learned of the new program which included the use of educational blocks made by Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel. The blocks were called Froebel Gifts, and Frank's mom Anna wanted them for her family, so she purchased a set. Frank played with the blocks quit often and even says these blocks helped him to begin his thoughts of designing.

When the family was struggling financially to make ends meet they eventually moved to Vermouth, Massachusetts so that his dad, William could head a small congregation. Still struggling financially the family ended up moving back to their hometown of Spring Green, Wisconsin. His parents sadly ended up divorcing when Frank was 14. His mother was tired of struggling financially and asked William to leave.

The divorce was a messy one when his dad William actually sued his mother Anna, for a lack of physical affection. His mother Anna kept custody of Frank and his two sisters after the divorce and his dad moved away and Frank claimed he never saw his dad again after that. That was when frank changed his middle name of Lincoln to Lloyd to honor his mothers Welsh family.

Frank attended Madison high school and went on to take classes at the University of Wisconsin. Doing alright fr himself working and attending classes he soon moved to the city of Oak Park, Illinois where he build his first home. He was married at this time to Catherine Lee Tobin. She was from a wealthy family and helped Frank become known throughout the community.

Soon after Frank had moved to Illinois, his mother came there too, where he bought her a home very near by. Working for the firm Adler & Sullivan, he started to receive all the residential designs to create. He loved his work and took pride in it. Sadly Frank was taking side jobs and was designing homes without Sullivan knowledge. Although Sullivan was very fond of Frank,
