Short stories: Holiday stories for children
HEY KIDS IT IS VICTORIA DAY!
This weekend it was Victoria Day. Gosh, the fireworks were superb. I'm sure you agree.
Did you notice that you could hear them for miles and miles. I could, they seemed
to be coming from every direction. How peoples voices cheered and awed in excitement
of the terrific display. Did you seem to hear sounds over and over again? The crowds
voices traveled for miles.
Why is it so so loud? You can hear those sounds over and over again. I figured it out,
the sound is being reflected and echoing repeatedly. Sometimes 5 or 6 times. Each
sound is being reflected by a surface because smooth surfaces such as a wall,
a cliff, a side of a house, or a high roof often produce echos. Imagine that,
a simple echo is heard from one surface. If the echo is heard from two surfaces the
echo is repeated many times. I believe this is a compound echo.
Even clouds, reflect sounds. If there are heavy clouds echoing is echoed and
Re-echoed similarly to a roll of thunder in the sky. As a matter of fact the
rumbling of thunder is just the many reflections by clouds of sound that
accompanies lightning.
How far away is the echo, or the object? Echo's can actually be used for measuring
distance, subsequently the distance of an object is determined by timing the
echos of radio waves.
Anyway, while my friends and were having a sing-a-long after the fireworks
we heard our voices echo. We tried our hardest to keep our voices harmonized.
Have you ever been in a cave, or an underground tunnel and heard the echos?
I have noticed that in concerts or other public halls that heavy drapes are used
to absorb sound which is reflected from bare walls or ceilings.
This is the most exciting day of my life. I just had to write to you about it.
The fireworks did not stop until midnight and after there was still a ringing
in my ears. After that everything seemed so quiet. Well i guess i will go to
sleep now. Hope i don't hear anything.
Talk to you next year! Happy Holiday.
Just a note i have to go to school tomorrow and of course all my friends will
be talking about the fireworks display. I think i had the best firework display
because by dad was in charge. He looked after the whole school and displayed
the fireworks right on the school grounds. So there are not many parents or
kids that can say they had a better display. Mind you if you went down to
Canada Wonderland this year i heard it was excellent.
Next year me and my dad might not do the fireworks display we might go out
to see other displays. We'll see. I am going to save some of the fireworks
for next year. I found that the prices were reasonable and maybe next year
we will be able to afford more.
You can come to our display next year. Just ask anyone at the school and
they will tell you exactly what time to be there next year.
See you next year!
