Only in my mind
Exist the still-frame shots
Of picture-perfect memories
The best moments of my life, and the worst
Are not captured on film
But only in the snapshots of the mind's eye
And the lenses of the heart.
I see you, years younger, and smiling
And her hands, work-worn but gentle
I see the love of my life wrap his arms around me
At the bottom of a staircase
The edges are blurred, not by time-worn ink
But by the lack of a border at all,
For no paper holds these secret images.
One day my children may search albums
For memories of my younger days
And they will find images of youth,
Smiling faces, and bygone eras engraved on film
And paper. But no camera can ever capture the truth
Of the whole of who I am, because that is trapped only
In the snapshots in my soul.
