MOMMA CAN'T HELP YOU NOW
I didn't see what took place. I was home with my kids,
but I've seen it in my mind a million times since.
How a man could kick and beat another, and then brag,
Too my simple mind, that just didn't make sense.
It took place, he said, outside a club in Brownwood Texas.
I believe the year was nineteen eighty six. He and two
buddies out on the town, rednecks, soon to have red hands
Oilfield workers, looking for trouble and trouble they found.
One of them was a big ole boy, he'd hit nearly three hundred pounds,
He kept dancing with a young mans girl. The young man stepped in,
said she was with him, and the room turned into a whirl.
The bouncers arrived and the big boy and his buddies were made
to leave, but what happened later would fill the lives of others
with grief.
He called for momma as they kicked and beat him down.
He called for momma, but no mercy was found.
He called for momma as he lay dying on the ground.
He called for momma, and all they said was,
"Momma can't help you now".
The three men waited in the shadows for the young man
to come out the door. Three men on one just don't seem fair,
And the three men evened the score. They kicked and beat him,
He got away once into his truck, but they broke the window.
The young man had run out of luck.
He called for momma as they kicked and beat him down.
He called for momma, but no mercy was found.
He called for momma as he lay dying on the ground.
He called for momma, and all they said was,
"momma can't help you now".
