Dogs and Humans all experience nerves and anxiety. Humans can cope better than dogs. We know how to relax in times of stress and need to teach our wonderful friend and companion how to do the same, guiding them through their trauma. It is with correct training that your dog learns how to trust your guidance.
Some dogs are highly strung, where others are so carefree that nothing bothers them until the overhead clap of thunder, then all hell breaks loose and they are in chaos. Talk quietly and reasure him.
Early training is important. You set the atmosphere and lead by example. If you are calm, your dog will follow your lead. Talk quietly to him, rub his head, and massage his ears. Walk slowly around the home with him until he is calm. Never yell at a nervous or highly-strung dog. This could make him worse, especially when he is already upset.
Exercise and Obedience
All dogs love to go to the park and chase after a ball or Frisbee. This not only releases that pent up nervous emotion stored inside a highly-strung dog, he will love the interaction with you. Before taking your dog to the park, make sure you have trained him to come, when you call. There is nothing worse than another dog appearing on the scene and your dog ignores you. Obedience training is a necessity.
Interaction with other dogs and humans
It is important for dogs to interact with other dogs and humans. Always introduce dogs on neutral ground. Arrange to meet a friend and their dog at your local park. Never expect your friend's dog to be welcome in your dogs home without them meeting first. Jealousy could cause a violent response. Make sure both dogs are under leash control, to avoid any problems. This meeting will give both dogs more security and confidence to play with other dogs.
TV or Radio
Turn the TV or radio on before leaving the house. This gives the dog a sense of security, comfort and distraction. It will help to drown out other noises and distractions.
Comfort your Dog
When your dog is distressed, he needs comforting by you. Give him a cuddle and a hug, massage him and say good boy, and mean the words, as dogs are very sensitive to the tone of your voice, they are not stupid. Nothing upsets a dog more than thunder. Where possible, bring the dog inside and talk to him quietly while stroking him. You could speak to your vet if he suffers too much from anxiety. Try natural remedies rather than drugs.
By following the above your dog should relax and enjoy the benefits of your loving home.
