The true meaning of Christian Community to me: is when Christians from all races of people can come together; and fellowship at the same church and enjoy God's message. I love when I can meet other fellow Christians and talk with them about the goodness of GOD. For example, I was raised in the Traditional African American church, where the church was 100 percent black. However, when I began college, I became friends with a mixture of different races of students. Therefore, one day, my roommate and I, decided to go to a church that was not in our surrounding area.
On Sunday morning, the Church van came to our dorm on campus, and picked us up. Now when the van got there, I noticed that the driver of the van was very nice, and he helped my roommate and me, inside of the van. However, when I sat down, I looked around and noticed that my roommate and I were the only two African American People in the church van. Immediately, I told myself that everything was going to be all right, but I still got a knot in my stomach just the same. I was nervous at this point: I just did not want to do anything that would embarrass myself or say or do something stupid. In addition, once the driver started driving, I started thinking about being the token black and how that we are going to be the odd balls at their church. In addition, as we got closer to the church, it seemed like the further we got from the dorm and the college: It seemed like the driver was taking us to a place that was moons away. I knew that I would be going to a suburb, but I did not know that it would be as far as it was, in drive. The drive to the church was about an hour long. Finally, the time had come, and we had arrived at this huge brown church, made out of brick, with a beautiful lawn. Again, the driver helped my roommate and me, out of the church van, as he did with all of the women in the van. Finally, the time had come, and we had arrived at this huge brown church. Now, when I first walked into the church, I was nervous, but I took a deep breath and I walked inside. Immediately, I noticed that, unlike at the African American church, there was no usher to seat us. Therefore, my roommate and I took our seats, and at that point, a woman walked over to our seat, and she gave us a book of hymns to sing. I really liked this part of the service because we all sang beautiful spirituals together at the same time.
Matter a fact, I was so pleased with the singing of the hymns, that after everyone in the church finished singing and had sat back down in their seats, my roommate and I, were so overjoyed, that we stood up and shouted out, Amen Church, Amen. Unfortunately, we did not mean to get so much attention, and thought others would join in with us. However, the entire congregation turned around, looked at us, and smiled.
Now after church was over, my roommate and I, tried to head for the front door, and hide our faces because we were so embarrassed. However, we did not get very far, because the Pastor approached us at the door, and asked if we would like to stick around for a special Fellowship breakfast that is being served downstairs, in the church basement. My roommate and I were thrilled with excitement and we felt welcomed, because the church members wanted to dine with us and get to know who we are. Therefore, this experience taught me a lesson about the Christian Community, and the true meaning of it. I realized there was no reason for me to be nervous at all. Furthermore, the people were very warm and friendly and that is how I believe the Christian Community to be. The Christian community is not black or white: it is not a color at all.
