Testimonies: My most memorable Fourth of July
The most memorable Fourth of July was when the cow nearly jumped over the moon.
The story goes: The guys named Jeff, George and other friends were showing off their
fine display of fireworks. Then, one of the guys thought it would be spectacular to
lite off three rounds of streamers, roman candles, zingers, sonic booms all at once.
You name it, they had it, all lined up and ready to go. Just as I expected, the inevitable went wrong.
They barely got out of the way when one of the fireworks dismantled and shot straight across
the field, brazing George and landing by one of the cows on the other side of the field. With sparks flying everywhere, the startled cows nearly jumped the fence; while one of them jumped so very high that we laughed so hard and said it was like the cow jumping over the moon. No animals were injured in this escapade.
Soon after that, we watched the State police drive by. You should have seen the guys
scampering here and there to hide any allegedly illegal collection displays we had going.
They asked who owned the property, we came forward, and just at that moment, half and
quarter sticks were being set off at a nearby location that didn't look to be as open as
our field was, so the police took off. They had a sure bet on their hands on the next call.
Of course, that was the end of the show. Then it was watermelon eating time. Who could top that one anyway? On a full moon at that!
