How to avoid online business scams

Last summer was a tough and emotional summer for me as it came only a couple of months after my boyfriend was sent to the hospital on the verge of a heart attack at the age of 48. He would up having a triple bypass on my 28th birthday. I was emotional, depressed and wanted nothing more than to quit work and have my own business to help support him. I figured it would get both of us a way out of our individual debts and that would help make his recovery less stressful.

At the end of June it came. The answer to my prayers! I had found what I thought would be an easy and economical way to start an online business. There would be no upfront costs, plenty of support, and all the resources I would need. A dream come true but in fact the beginning of a nightmare that I am still trying to dig myself out of. I had found the ad on Careerbuilder.com. The advertisement stated that they were a company that wanted to help people with their dreams of owning an online business and all they wanted in return was 1% of sales as their parent company was a credit card processing company. It didn't seem like much for all that they were going to do for the people who joined the program. People who were accepted in to this "highly coveted" opportunity would be able of choose their own products from a club that was highly used by EBay stores (they would pay for the membership), pay for all credit processing fees, free website building, business consulting, Pay-Per-Click credits, free business cards and a bunch of other features. I would have to give the opportunity a 4 year try but could cancel at anytime. There would be a leasing contract to sign with a separate company but if I wanted to cancel they would transfer the lease to someone else on my behalf. All I would have to pay is $50 dollars a month for the first year to lease the credit card machine and no other fees. I came to the conclusion that even if I wound up not making sales per my choices of products I could live with that much damage per month.

As everything was being finalized, I was told I could choose anything I wanted to sell and would have the opportunity to sell name brand items like Versace and Coach. Fantasies danced through my head, as I thought I had hit the jackpot opportunities to advance my finances. Life of vacations and processing sales while in hotel rooms of cities like Los Angeles and New York City seemed like a possibility finally. The guy who passed himself off as just the sales person and not the owner
