make sure you use all the adjustments that come on the pack to optimize comfort. Get a pack that is big enough to hold enough gear, but light enough to not weigh you down. Try on the pack at the store, and ask if you can throw some other things inside to get a feel for how it feels when loaded.
8) The right clothing. Cotton has no place in the woods, aside for as sleeping clothes. When hiking, choose polyester or other synthetics, or wool. Dress in layers depending on the weather. In cold climates, have a base layer, long sleeve shirt, fleece, and rain/wind-shell at the least, in addition to long-johns, and weather-proof pants. In warmer weather, shorts are nice, but be aware of where your legs are; pants provide better protection, and some are nearly as cool as shorts are. Always, always have a rain shell or poncho. Don't ever trust the weatherman who said it isn't going to rain.
9) Sleeping bag. Choose a bag that is rated about 10 degrees colder than the coldest temperatures you'll encounter. Try it out at the store to make sure you are comfortable. If you move around a lot at night, you'll want a wider bag.
10) Emergency blanket. I have had the same one in my pack for 18 years. I have never needed it, but I will never take it out, because that will be the situation i wished I had it.
- I didn't mention tents because I ran out of room. Plus, I don't consider a tent as essential as the items I listed because it is easier to find shelter than it is to find warmth (hence, why I mentioned bringing a sleeping bag)
