Mammoth Lakes, California is one of those areas of America that you just have to visit to truly understand the amount of attractions that are available for both young and old. It is an American treasure that a lot of Americans don't realize they have - except for those in California who have had this playground right in their backyards.

Many people may believe that Mammoth Lakes is just a winter ski resort but there is a multiplicity of recreation activities year round. Not only are there the customary winter sports of skiing, both downhill and cross-country, available at Mammoth Mountain, but the area also has trout fishing (some of the best in the world), kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, golf, hiking and sightseeing. (Are you tired yet?)

Some of the least know attractions in Mammoth Lakes are listed for the vacationer in this article and by far the least known but most exciting is ballooning. Who knew that this attraction was in this area! Mammoth Balloon Adventures offers the visitor about a 1 to 1 and hour trip with the highlight being a beautiful Sierra sunrise. They have balloons available year round for small parties of just two (perfect for couples, or honeymooners) as well as larger balloons that take parties of 6 or more. In fact, groups larger than 6 can ask about the family or group discounts. Besides the sunrise, most of these flights offer, a full brunch but it must be requested before hand. From beginning to end this is about a 3 hour adventure that begins your day of sightseeing in a grand way. You can get further information by e-mailing: Dave@mammothballoonadventures.com

Great day trip for the family is the trip to the Hot Creek. This area has a variety of geologic happenings, spouting geysers and for the fisherman in the family - some of the largest fish hatcheries in the area. For further information on Fish Hatchery Tours call 760-934-2664.

After a day trip, perhaps you want something that doesn't require much excitement or walking, so for these days there are several art galleries that famous local artists have in the area. Being a fan of Native American art, I suggest that you don't miss the Gathering Feathers, Singing Leaves Gallery and Collectables (what a mouth full!) which has a collection of Native American and Western artifacts, fine art, jewelry and rugs. This gallery is located on 452 Old Mammoth Road or call for further information to 760-924-8040.
