They say that in this day and age the faith has weaned and we now seek salvage in false gods. Our modern day form of worshiping has lead us from the house of god to the shopping mall or the motorway or the fancy office. However with me being an unemployed student, my new idol cannot be too expensive a commodity. For me my place of worship is the local Starbucks. And my source of Life an Americano with an extra shot of espresso.
This is an article about my favorite beverage, but to me coffee is o much more than a mere beverage- it's a lifestyle choice. No other type of food or drink has a way of uniting and pacifying quite like coffee does.
For my Starbucks is the center of my community of fellow students. It is our Mecca after a long hard day at the library, our oasis in a desert of deadlines. And my coffee is what keeps me going through the long hard lectures and hours spent pouring over books in the library. When it is not before me I dream if its sweet aroma and hope there is just enough caffeine in my veins to carry me to my next high.
With all the range of modern day beverages from a skinny latte to a grande mocha, one may ask bewildered, what my passion for a dark milk-less coffee is. I say its wonder lies in its simplicity. No other beverage provides the strong bitter taste or the burst of energy that comes within moments of its ingestion. No other drink tastes different each time its brewed or wafts down the sidewalk to entice any listless bodies inside. No, one must agree that stark black coffee carries an almost mystical quality from its origins in Costa Rica or the heart of Brazil. Its stark and strong and does not lie about what it is. In its simplicity lies genious and that is what I seek from a drink!
And as a form of socializing; why coffee consumption is superlative to all other activities. While sport can divide friends based on talent or ambitions coffee is a binding factor. While a meal out may fall outside many a budget a cup of coffee comes within the means of the majority. In clubs and bars one can often not hear over the music but picture a selection of mates in a coffee shop and the only sound that plays on your eardrums is the excited chatter that exchanges between them. Why so great and unifying a drink it is, I argue, if we spent more time drinking coffe we may inadvertently lead to world peace!
Coffee is my fuel for life, a passion I share with my friends and family and my Saviour that keeps me sane.
