Memoirs: Birth of a child

Books can never fully prepare you for the birth of a child. You can get general ideas from books, but very few births are ever by the book. The reason for this is because anything can happen at any time. You can have a perfectly normal pregnancy, only to have something happen at the birth. Or you can be fortunate enough to have no complications at all. Or things could fall into the other hand, and can go wrong from the start. The main point is that books can never fully prepare you for what may, or may, not happen.

I have two kids, both boys, and I was fortunate enough to have fairly normal births for both of them. My first child, who is twelve, was born weighing 8 lbs, and showing up a week early. My husband took his oldest son and myself to the North Side Mall of the city that we lived in at the time. I went into the restroom because I felt as though I had to go, only to find out that I had started bleeding. When I told my husband what was going on, he quickly rushed us out of the mall. The doctor had told us that if at any time I started bleeding, for us to get to the hospital, because that could be the sign of something serious. We went down New Berlin Road, past a state trooper, the whole time doing 70 in a 45. The state trooper did not bother to follow us or stop us. My husband later assumed that he knew that something was wrong. Either that or he did not want to do his job.

We arrived at the hospital about twenty minutes later. We did not have a chance to fill out the admission forms, because when they found out what was going on they immediately took me up to labor and delivery, in case there were some hidden complications. When they took me into the examining room my water broke going everywhere. I was not allowed to walk to my room, nor was I allowed to ride in a wheel chair, I had to stay laying down on the bed the entire time. I was not allowed to get up and go walking around, or to even go to the bathroom. If I had to go I had to use either a catheter or a bed pan, both were very uncomfortable. But it had to be done so that the baby could drop down for the delivery.
When the doctors realized that the contractions were not strong enough, they were barely registering on the monitor, I was given medication to make them stronger. When they gave me this medicine is when it got painful for me. I was then given just enough pain medicine to take the edge off of the pain. About three quarters of the way through the delivery the doctors told me not
