Good reasons for homeschooling your children

I have homeschooled my children for thirteen years and am delighted with the results. Here from the heart are 20 good reasons for homeschooling your children.

1) RESPONSIBILITY: They are YOUR children. No one knows them better than you do. Even a teacher who is fond of your children could not love them and be as interested in their welfare as you are. These children are your legacy and you are responsible for the type of adult they grow to become.

2) SUPPORT: Every teacher will tell you that a student's success in school depends on the amount of parental support they receive at home. When your children are home on your family's schedule, it is a lot easier to give wholehearted support to their activities and endeavors.

3) EFFICIENCY: Home education is more efficient than any classroom education can be. If you were educated in a classroom of 30 students, do you remember how much time was wasted forming lines, waiting for everyone to have their bathroom break, or waiting for the last child to finish their math quiz so the class could move on to the next subject? In homeschooling, the lines are very short, you go to the bathroom when you need to, and learning can go on even while you are having recess or lunch. A sixth grader spends about seven hours at school, add an hour for the bus ride, and comes home with four to five hours of homework. A homeschooled sixth grader can complete more coursework in about five hours and have time to play outside like a child should.

4) TALENT: If your child has a particular gift (music, art, dance, sports, writing, apiculture) they will be able to complete their schoolwork with time leftover to pursue their passion.

5) ACCEPTANCE: A shy, nervous, or socially challenged child will not learn how to overcome these qualities in an institution - they'll learn how to become invisible. At home the child with hearing, vision, or motor control challenges can be accommodated so the focus is on their education, not how they compete against other children. A child whose birthdate puts them in a class structure of older, larger children won't be penalized by the peer pressure.

6) INTEREST: If your child enjoys learning, home education won't squash that enthusiasm by the jeers and bullying of other children. At museums where institutionalized children are on tour with homeschooled children, the ones from "school" don't ask questions, while the ones from "home" have numerous questions and are not afraid to speak to the docent
