The case for "unschooling"

by Nancy Cogar

Created on: May 19, 2008

Unfortunately, The public school system is a failure.
Sadly, many graduating students can't read or write and without this ability you just cannot function as a productive citizen.
Public Schools have not worked due to many reasons. Some teachers do not care.
If I were a teacher I would feel responsible for any child that was failing my class.
Thinking back through the years, it seems suspicious that I got more than my fair share of "bad" teachers.

Lack of concern for a struggling child was a problem then and certainly this hasn't changed.
I home schooled my children off and on through the years due to the failure of the public schools to educate my children.
Some parents are against homeschooling, probably for the same reasons why I am against public schools.
Schools are not the place to " make friends and socialize".
Parents send their children to school to get an "education!
Seems at times you get everything else but it's intended purpose.
I feel the ones against homeschooling are lying to themselves about a child needing to develop "social skills".
My children had no need of drugs and violence, and a host of other damaging influences.
Many teachers have no ability or desire to cope with the situation.
My heart goes out to any parent who wishes to home school but can't.
It is heart-wrenching to watch a teenager falling prey to peer pressure.
My youngest Son is a great example, ( and I have many) when he was first enrolled into the public school system he was much farther ahead than the other students.
Unfortunately, the teacher did not appreciated that he was "particular" with his writing.
My Son had beautiful handwriting and correct spelling.
I walked into my Son's class for a PTA meeting one day and was feeling very satisfied due to his work being posted in the hall with the other students.
My sons paper was the " only" legible essay hanging in the hall.
Imagine my horror when the teacher complained about my Son taking too long to do his school work.
I pointed out to the teacher my disgust, She quickly looked away, apparently not pleased with my complaint.
Sadly, I didn't removed my Son immediately from the public school system.
It took a few years of struggling and failure until I fully realized it was a losing battle.
After removing my Son it took some time to undo the damage the public school system had done and had NOT taught.
Seems to me the longer a child is in that system, The worse the child will be in the long run.
Better to learn "NOTHING" at home then to learn what is taught in that Godless place.
