Christian reflections: Honoring marriage

Marriage Problems

To say we have marriage problems in Western culture is like saying a skunk stinks. It ought to be strongly apparent to anyone in the area. As our culture distances itself from God and His ways, marriage is honored less and less. At the same time, adultery, fornication, and homosexuality are glorified more and more. "Living together" (we're not talking "roommates" here) has become an accepted practice in our society. The divorce courts overflow with men and women discarding their mates.

But here's what makes my hair stand on end: things are not much different in the church! We have just about the same divorce rate as the pagans. Christianity is not having much impact on the world because it's not having much on us! George Barna writes:
...our research for close to two decades has shown that Christians have had an alarming lack of impact on the national culture as a direct outgrowth of their faith. Although many people assume that Christianity is a pervasive influence in our society, an objective analysis of our culture indicates that Christianity is much less pervasive than in years past. (George Barna, The Barna Report, November/December 1997, p.1. Word Ministry Resources, 7200 Imperial Drive, Waco, Texas 76712.)
We are less pervasive because we are not keeping up with current methods of communication. We have allowed Satan to position us where we do not connect with our world. This is especially true when it comes to marriage and family.
The answers are in the Bible, but somehow the message of the world overwhelms our thinking. Non-stop facts and ideas barrage us...many of them alien to God's purposes. Again, this is particularly true when it comes to our spouse and kids. In such an atmosphere our "indoor Christianity" is both silent and invisible. As God's people, we must do at least two things: (1) know and practice what the Bible teaches about marriage and family and (2) let the world see godly marriages to the glory of God through Jesus Christ.
