Tips for keeping a travel journal

by Nick Norton

Created on: May 18, 2008

Writing a travel journal can be a fun experience while on a vacation or trip. It can also be a great tool for jotting down ideas or information when you need to, so it is always smart while on your trip to keep your travel journal on hand at all times. You can keep it in a messenger bag with your cell phone and wallet, or (if it is small enough) you can keep it in your pocket.

what kind of notebook should I get for my travel journal? If you are carrying it around in a bag you can get pretty much any type. But if you are carrying it in your pocket you should get a little one with lots of pages.

When you start your travel journal or log, there are two ways that you can go about writing it. Travel log type one) at the end of every night, while in your hotel or wherever your staying, you write down everything that you experienced throughout that particular day. Thus way is probably the least reliable in terms of accuracy of information. if you are anything like me, you can't remember something in great detail that you did nine hours ago. If you don't have a great memory then you should try type two. Travel log type two) in this type you carry your travel log around with you, not only to jot down information conveniently when you need to, you also write down everything you experience that day as it happens. This type can work out greatly if yo have a moment throughout your day to stop and write stuff down in your travel journal for five minutes.

Now some people naturally know what they want to write about when they open their journal. but if you are one of those guys and gals who have no clue what to write about but still would like to write something, never fear! Here are some tips about writing topics in your journal. I always like to start out by dating the top of my page before writing, some people like to be even more specific and include the time that you started writing and the time that you started. If you would like to try this and you do travel log type one, you can just write the starting time at the top next to the date and the end time at the bottom of the entry. If you want to be accurate with your time and are doing travel log type two, you can write starting time in the margin next to your first word and the end time in the margin next to the last word. Now that you have your date and time, you are ready to write. Some things that you can write about would be what happened through your day and what did you think about it. What kind of people did you meet that day? What did they say to you? What did you say? These are the types of things that you can write about.

Now that you have your book, you know how to carry it, and you know how to write in it, go forth and produce great travel journals.
