Runway fashion: Fall/Winter 2008

Fall/ Winter 2008-2009 is all about something familiar. Perhaps if you were born after the 1980s, it is all novel and innovated. Many designers decided to wave adieu to that light and bright summer wardrobe that will appear this season. On the runways from Paris to New York, autumn has arrived and winter will is no longer on the frigid horizon. The clothes should wrap you up warm and keep you looking cool.

Less was more in Paris this year with a noticeably lack of accessories, most likely due to current economic conditions throughout the world. Perhaps that also explains why the 2008 season's colors are dark and somewhat dreary.

Was that Jean Shrimpton (the "Shrimp" as she was known in the sixties was one of the first supermodels) modeling Pucci or a fresh case of deja vu? The line was delightfully colorful but the classification can be described as Pucci 60s retro.

John Galliano of Dior brought into play swinging sixties sirens, for those who remember, Andy Warhol's Superstars - Edie Sedgwick and Ultra Violet.

The majority of the masters at the Paris Runway shows were all in agreement though. Black and grey were the color palette of choice. It is so apparent that nouveau bohemian chic ranged throughout the shows from Chanel to Givenchy.

Karl Lagerfeld brought in shaped shoulder padded jackets and long skirts reminisce of a time frame perhaps of Leslie Caron in the film "Gigi".

Valentino also mixed romance with hints of color against black coat dresses. And yes, skirts and dress are back with perhaps slim legged pants thrown in black of course.

Stella McCarthy little black strapless dress stated the tell tale sign that black may be the only color for winter.

A slight hint of bright tint appeared from Yves St Laurent as a lining peaking and slithering through the hem of a skirt and the collar of a jacket on a black grey suit.

A bright blush of color that could be for either the fashion and art scenes, highlighted the 1950s by Christian Lacroix. This dazzling approach to structured design only conveyed fond memories of high chic.

A minimalist extreme from Celine of winter white with white hose, white shoes and white coat nearly blinded all after viewing the constant black or grey from all others.

The younger designers, such as Yohji Yamamoto and Maison Martin Margiela, are ground-breaking in a creative direction for style. It is apparent that yesterday's fashions are old hat. They are reaching to become fashion's faces of the future and are doing so rather successfully.
