Poetry: Inspired by the Bible

Joseph Loved Too

Tiny fingers curled 'round yours
Trusting eyes that at you smile
The angel said it was the son of God
To you he was just your child.

You never saw his death. But you watched his life
As quietly he grew
Into a man that was his father's pride
While in your heart you knew.

You couldn't hold on, for he was not yours
Though you, to him, belonged
In childhood his life was in your hands
But your hope on him hung.

As he helped you carve wood, did you know his death
Would be on one of those very trees
In the late night hours of solitude
What were your prayers & pleas?

Through you God learned to live as a man
To suffer poverty and sorrow
To love with a compassion that ran so deep
He'd die for all our tomorrows.

I'm sure as a father you made mistakes.
Some left in your heart to regret.
But now they're covered in your son's blood.
The son you loved though you never begat.
