Low-cost vacations in Canada

by Susan Booth

Created on: May 18, 2008

My husband and i have spent many vacations in Canada. Initially we started with the usual places like the rockies, calgary, vancouver etc. After that we started to branch out and a few years ago we spent 3 weeks in an RV touring the Yukon. Having flown to Whitehorse via Vancouver we joined a group of other RVers and began our tour. The tour took us in a loop via Skagway, Dawson , Tok and then back to Whitehorse. During the time we experienced the fantastic scenery and even came across a mother grizzly bear with 2 cubs on the side of the road in the kluane national park, needless to say we didn't get out of the vehicle but managed to take photos through the window, with my foot on the accelerator pedal ready to go at a moments notice!

Whilst we were staying in Dawson we arranged a flight up over the Arctic circle whilst landed on the Dempster Highway next to the sign that says that you have flown over the Artic Circle! We didn't stay long as the insects were the size of horses! The flight back was a little hairy as the weather had changed from glorious sunshine to clag.
We also experienced the famous white nights, which are extremely strange, not so much white as creamy yellow.
As we had never done any Rving before although we had done a lot of caravanning in the uk we teamed up with a group of other Rvers, now though we would have no hesitation in "doing our own thing", in fact 2 years ago we rented an RV and traveled independently across Canada from Calgary to Nova Scotia. We rented our Rv from Canadream who were very efficient and set off cross country, my husband had planned our route with great precision but we found that instead of going to the campgrounds that we had planned to stay in it was easy enough to just pull off the highway when we saw a campground that we liked the look of, the time of year that we were traveling mid june to mid july gave us no problems when it came to getting into campgrounds but obviously in august things are different.
Last year we spent most of our time on vancouver island, having rented a fifth wheel and truck from canadream and that was fantastic, the island has everything you could possibly wish for, from a lovely city in the south to remote wilderness in the north of the island. many areas of the island are suitable for whale watching and we had the most fantastic experience seeing orcas in the wild at telegraph cove.
