I know this may sound a little cliche, but I believe many should have heard of this saying "If u're happy together as a couple, everyday can be Valentine's Day". I am a person who believes that you do not need to have a special day for a celebration of love for each other as a couple.
Having a celebration on your anniversary may be much more meaningful than a Valentine's day celebration. It is evident that currently Valentine' Day is more about commercial hype as it is not hard to find thousands of retailers advertising various packages, items, promotions simply for V-Day itself. Not to mention, prices of flowers normally sky-rocket during this period of time. Hotels or resorts come up with special packages coupled with romantic massages or dinners just for the occasion. As such, one finds it hard to feel that Valentine's day is not about commercial hype as thousands of people out there make a rush just to get a small bouquet of flowers or a dinner reservation for the day.
Nowadays, one gets the feeling that the act of gift-giving during Valentine's day becomes more of an obligation than a gift of the heart. Often people find themselves rushing to get a gift simply because everyone around them is doing so, and hence we succumb to peer pressure just to please our other half. I believe this statement applies more to males, but we get the idea. Valentine's day is becoming more of a commercial hype simply because of all the advertising by numerous retailers out there.
Additionally if you notice Valentine's day has become more of a day for couples than singles. If you walk along the main streets chances are that you find that nine out of ten people you meet are often accompanied by their significant other. The chance of a single finding a romantic opportunity is rare because everywhere you go, you normally bump into people in a relationship. It may be better for singles to join matchmaking dinner sessions in groups rather than to try to find love on Valentine's day, which is normally couple saturated. Moreover, most singles would probably avoid going out on this day because it may be very hard for one to even get a space in a nice restaurant and not be reminded of the fact that they are on their own on this day. With so many factors in play, it is hard not to feel that Valentine's day has evolved to become a very commercial day rather than a special day or singles out there to find love.
As such, I strongly believe that Valentine's day has become more of a commercial hype now.
