We have become so dependent on technology, so why not spend time on virtual relationships? There have been plenty of stories of virtual relationships that eventually turned into wonderful, loving and lasting real life relationships.
Virtual relationships creates a psychological safety net and is easier to handle than real life relationships. Compared to real life relationships, it is easier to control and "safer". It is our human tendency to try to protect ourselves emotionally having a relationship through the Internet allow us to do that because the other person will never know our true feelings. They only know what we tell them and they cannot read our nonverbal communication. By not showing our true feelings, we are not as attached emotionally to these relationships. Or at least it feels like we are in control.
With virtual relationships, we do not feel as inadequate and do not have to live up to expectations. Starting a virtual relationship can feel much more real because you usually never see the other person except in photographs. Without having to worry about looks, we feel much more comfortable expressing our views and do not have to try as hard to please the other party.
Another thing that makes virtual relationships more appealing is the lack of commitment. When one side feels like the excitement is gone, he or she can easily cut the relationship off as easy as deleting the contact from e-mails and instant messengers. Fights are calmer and perhaps more reasonable. It is certainly less stress to deal with compared to a real life relationship. There is no fuss or mess to break up. There are no tears or screams involved.
Personally, I think the fundamentals for why virtual relationships are taking precedence over real life relationships is the former type generally have more connections and depth. When two people come together because of their personalities and understanding of each other instead of physical attraction and lust, the relationship will be a healthier and happier one. Relationships built on personality compability will without a doubt last longer than a lustful one. Physical beauty only lasts so long.
While virtual relationships definitely lack the warmth and intimacy of real life relationships, it is only in the beginning until the couple decide to meet. Today's society are also more drawn to the convenience and short-term fun flings in virtual relationships. It may not be a bad thing because in the end, it boils down to what you want.
