Hiring managers: How to find the right candidate

The position of executive manager or general manager is an important position. There are a few steps to hiring a general or executive manager. If you are thinking of a person to do the same work the owner would otherwise be doing, except under the owner's direction, then the requirements should be self-evident. Otherwise, an imaginative study of your business is necessary and will uncover what you need, to put together a plan of action.

First take a good look at the needs of the company. This is done by looking at every aspect of the business, from buying pens and paper to the marketing team, the executive management of all company departments, and the future plans for the company. Look at all expenditures and weigh the cost of each with the benefit produced. These considerations are time sensitive as plans develop or change with time.

Once you have a good understanding of the company, then move to the second step, formulate an idea about the kind of person you need in order to achieve the goals of the company, and list all the plausible duties for that person. When you have reached a list of tentative components for the job position, then make sure the expectations are clearly defined. You should never leave it to an employee to guess at what you want, you should let him or her know up front. You must be realistic. You can not expect too much nor too little from the manager, unless you have a special situation. You need to know your business to know what to expect from each employee.

The third step, evaluating applicants, has three important considerations. What is the monetary cost of hiring each particular candidate? What is the social impact to the company? Do you believe the applicant of the particular file you are scrutinizing, can fulfill the requirements that need to be satisfied. Applicants should be considered on a case by case basis. Study each candidate's past, make the calls, observe. A person's past says, not everything, but almost everything about a person. If you seek to understand people by looking at their past, then you will know that occasionally someone makes a major change in their lives, this is not the usual thing and even then, clues to the change are interlaid in their past.

You want someone who is friendly, yet able to enforce peace, and smart in all the ways needed to do the job. Personality is important, you need someone with rhyme and reason, whose communications and actions are relevant to and fit the company goals. Look for professionalism, competence, ability to multi-task, understanding on how to perform the executive requirements, and someone interested in investing time in the opportunity you are providing.

Advertising the available management position on the internet is best, other media are no longer efficient enough. There are numerous job sites including a few high-end job sites. Take applications and file them, wait 24 hours before looking at the application, then follow up. Be friendly and firm.
