Jesus Christ was a Master Teacher that was opened to using any literary method He could to illustrate the truth He was trying to proclaim. Jesus had the wondrous knack of starting where His listeners were and using common every day happenings from their lives to lead them to where He wanted them to be. Therefore Jesus used such common every day items as mustard seed, bread, water, sheep, and light and the very rocks and stones he tripped over as He walked the dusty stony pathways of Galilee. Jesus was able to spin tales and tell stories that gripped the heart of people where they lived. As He spoke they listened and slowly but surely were drawn in just as a fisherman draws in the fish that has been lured by the bait he put on his hook and attached to his fish line.
One of Jesus favorite Story Telling methods was the use of Parables. Clarence D. Wiseman in His book, After This Manner. Quotes Kenneth S. Wuest "One of our Lord's favorite methods of teaching was that of using parables. (Matthew 13:3). The English word "parable" is from a Greek word which means "to throw along side." Thus a parable is an illustration thrown along side a truth in order to explain it." Jesus often resorted to this practice in His teaching. He would be trying to illustrate some truth about the Kingdom of God, and would use examples from every day life to explain the truth He was declaring.
The use of Parables is not limited only to the New Testament. There are a number of good parables used in the Old Testament. For example, Nathan, the prophet used a parable of a little ewe lamb to penetrate deeply in the heart of sinful King David. This is recorded in 2 Samuel 12:1-4 "Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And He came to him and said to him" There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor. The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds. But the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished; and it grew up together with him and his children. It ate of his own food and drank from his own cup, and lay in his bosom and it was like a daughter to him. And a traveler came to the rich man, who refused to take from his own flock and from his own herd to prepare one for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him". This parable used by Nathan stirred David to the bottom of his heart. Verses 5- 6 says "So David's anger was greatly aroused against the man, and he said to
