How to read guitar tabs

Reading guitar tablature is one of the easiest ways to learn various pieces of music, as well as learning techniques used by professional players. While buying guitar tabs may be expensive when it comes to purchasing mass quantities of it, it is a universal means of learning that can be easily understood. A good start to understanding guitar tablature would be to buy one of the many monthly magazine publications that contain tabs, these magazines are an affordable means of buying tablature. Tablature books containing the music of a specific album are available for most performers and bands, though the price of these publications may at times be expensive. One thing to be aware of when buying tablature that contains an entire album is exactly how technically proficient the musician was who recorded the music, for example, the "Jimi Hendrix: Band of Gypsys" album is mostly improvisation, and is extremely hard to learn because of it's organizational qualities.

The first thing that one notices when viewing guitar tablature is that there are six lines, with numbers imposed over them. The lines represent the strings of the guitar, in order from the highest pitched string (the high E)on top, to the lowest pitched (the low E) on the bottom. The numbers written on each line represent the fret for the note to be played at, perhaps that seems a bit basic, but that's about all there is to it. For it's simplicity I recommend tablature when first beginning the guitar, and even as an experienced player, this is still one of the fastest and easiest ways to learn new material.

When viewing tablature, there are also various symbols that you will see written either on the fret number or at times noted either below or above the string lines. These various symbols indicate what technique is used to sound the note properly. These symbols may include, a curved line indicating a bend (which may go in either direction), sometimes the symbol indicates a hammer-on, indicated by a parentheses. There are many more of these symbols to learn depending upon the expertise in which the piece was written. At the beginning of any tablature work, there is often a guide that tells exactly what these symbols mean and how to use them.

As mentioned before, tablature is not only a good way to learn songs, but it can be used to learn techniques as well. For example, how a musician gets a certain type of tonal quality for a note that they are playing. These techniques become important when learning guitar solos and riffs.
