As far as huskies go they are great pets for the right owner. If you know what you're getting in to then you're going to love your dog. I have owned two huskies and the one that I have now is 10 years old. Most people still think she is a puppy and she is still highly active. She was uncontainable when she was younger and was known to "cut a rug" around the house whenever you arrived home. These dogs are extremely smart and talkative.
I kept her in my room while I was living in a house full of girls and other dogs while I lived in college. At first, this was okay with her and if she was mad at me she would just wreck the room and spread papers out and chew up little things like pens and pencils. Then she got bored and decided that she would start letting herself out of the room and opening the door after I left. So I started locking her in with the deadbolt. The mastermind allowed me to come and go for about two weeks while carefully taking note of each move I made. When I came home she was out, again. She had figured out how to open the door and the deadbolt. The keen brains of huskies never seize to amaze me.
The first husky that I owned was in fact a professional escape artist. We fenced him in a half acre yard. He of course took the typical way out of digging. So we put an electric fence up around the bottom of the fence. He dug under the electric fence and chewed through the bottom of the fence and escaped yet again. We put him in a 10 x 10 chain link fence cage and chained him to it. He dug under that and pulled the cage up to the back window of the house and was sitting on the porch when we got home. Eventually the city threatened to fine us for not keeping the dog contained so we had no choice, but to give him up to a man with a farm.
These dogs need to run and need to get their energy out and if you keep them from it you will surely find their energy expended somewhere else. Her tactics get annoying, but I can definitely say that I would rather have a dog that scatters papers and chews up useless things rather than chewing up my shoes or messing up my furniture. These dogs are very active and extremely smart and may not be right for all people.
Unlike the other writers my dog is exceedingly loyal and protective. She is cautious of unknown people and sleeps by the door at night. She is not extremely affectionate and although she loves being pet, and sometimes howls until you do it, when meeting strangers she has a tendency to be aware of everything
