Antisemitism in the US today

by Moses Clark

Created on: May 17, 2008

As an African American in the United States, I agree and understand that anti-semitic people are still present and autocratic. Not only are people racist against Jewish people, but also Black, Latino, and Native American people. The fact of the problem is that racism, discrimination, and being prejudice against what you don't understand still exist. In my eyes the Holocaust is no different than 200 years of captivity, but everyones past reflects their own individual pain. To persecute someone because of their race is pure malignancy. People believe that America is really a United States, but if you come here, you will see division in the schools, jobs, even business opportunities. The only thing that's really not divided in this country is the church in some cases, but even that has it's cliques, and comfort zones.

How can you live in this country and face Antisemitism? You must embrace your beauty...that doesn't mean forget about the past, but focus on providing a better future for you and your children. The Jewish people are a beautiful race, and they are mentioned throughout the bible as an abundant people, with wisdom and talent. In society today, you can be accepted if you have a strong will, and good personality. Not saying ignorance won't be out there, but you can bypass those few, and surround yourself with positive people. Even though the bible said that the Phar'-i-see's who we're Jews persecuted Christ on the cross, we must remember that his seven disciples we're also Jews, and they loved him. My point is that there are good and bad people everywhere, and it's always been that way since the beginning of time.

When I was in high school about ten years ago, I had a friend in my class named Luis. Luis was a Jew, and he was also a Transsexual. Luis was very intelligent, and helped me out with my algebra, so I respected him as a person. The problem for Luis was that other kids didn't respect him, and they ridiculed him daily, in fear of what they did not understand. One day after class Luis told me that he felt like something terrible was going to happen to him, and he asked me if I could walk him to the bus stop. I was kind of nervous because I didn't want the kids to think that Luis and I we're involved so I said no, and Luis went off alone. That same evening Luis was jumped and beaten at the bus stop almost to death, and I was ashamed of myself. I went to the hospital to visit Luis, and he said he understood why I didn't walk him, and then he thanked me for visiting him. He told me that a crew of boys jumped him calling him a dirty Jew-fag, and I was almost in tears that day. Not only was Luis jumped because he was genetically transforming, but because he was Jewish. This showed me that antisemitism is just as dangerous as it was in the 1800's, if not more regressed.

As I close I want to comment by saying, "you don't have to be Jew, to recognize the hatred." Hatred is something that some people feel can be calmed by doctors, and medicine, but truthfully hatred can not be contained. It is an infection; a poison of the mind, weakening ones character. The only cure for hatred is love. To all my Jewish people out there, I want to encourage you to love yourself first, and then work on giving it back to society. Teach your children proudly about the history and culture of the Jewish people. Most important, get your kids accustomed to reading more books, and watching less cartoons and rap videos. Kudos to Chocolate Lady, I read your article and it was very inspiring. I hope that I have been a support to your purpose, and your family. God bless all, and continue to write courageously for the people!
