How to install Linux applications

source code. This can be grabbed via svn, bzr or direct download. Once you have the source code downloaded you will need to use the cd command in terminal to navigate into that folder. Writing a how to on compiling is difficult because software can be compiled a number of different ways depending on how the developer set it up. Most software sources often have a installation file for you to read that will give you more specific instructions. The first thing you need to make sure before you start compiling is that you have all your software's dependencies which can often be a pain. Dependencies are other software needed to run the one your installing. Compiling software usually takes a string of command one after another. For example once in your source code directory you may run "./configure" then "make" and finally "sudo make install". Another often used string of commands for compiling is "./autogen.sh" then "make" and lastly "sudo make install" Depending on which way you go depends on the source code you are using.

Out of the three ways to install software, your best bet is to install it by using a software repository. This method is fairly simple and does not necessarily need knowledge of terminal commands. Also by using this method your computer will stay up to date s the software on your computer gets updated.
