The best way to learn how to play an instrument is to learn young. The best way to encourage children to excel at any particular instrument is to give them a general foundation first.
I can't say enough about the benefits of taking them to Kindermusik classes. They are available worldwide and you can start your young one as early as 6 months. Parents attend classes with children under 3 years making it a wonderful bonding experience. Each course of classes comes with a CD of songs you can play for your child and by the time you have finished several courses you will have a very eclectic, child-centered music library.
If mom and dad happen to be separated, this can be a wonderful opportunity for mom or dad to spend some quality time with the young one. Many grandparents are taking their grandchildren too.
Once your child has acquired the basics of rhythm and movement they will have a leg up when trying to learn an instrument. My suggestion would be to present your child with a number of choices and let him or her decide which instrument to take up. When it comes times to practice, bribery works best. Children who are forced to practice their instruments are likely to resent the whole experience. Children who are told that, after practicing, they can have time to play on the computer or make a trip to the "Dollar Store" will have an entirely different attitude. If your child sticks with it long enough to develop some actual expertise, he or she will thank you as an adult.
