US elections 2008: Personal reflections on racial issues

This is not factual but a hypothesis as to how Obama could have stayed at Reverend Wright church for almost 20 years? A church that received a lot of scrutiny by the media that played the Reverend Wright greatest hits back to back-of the 20 or 30 seconds of sound bites that really reduced this controversial pastor ministry of over thirty five years and thousands and thousands of sermons to his latest hall of fame record of divisive and flamboyant "music" that he later came out and was willing to "sing this song" in front of the News Press Club a couple of weeks ago that ultimately lead Obama to "throw him under the bus."

Which brings me to the topic of this post. How could he stay twenty years in a church like this? First of all, what kind of church was this? This is a church that has an incredible outreach program that feeds thousands of hungry people in that region of which it is located. This is a church that clothe and house the naked and shelter-less. This is a church that has a prison ministry that reach out to the least of these in society and to those we would consider the so called "rubbish" of the earth. This is a church that takes out time to visit those in the hospital. And basically does a lot of good that extends beyond simply giving the word but taking the words of the Christian faith and putting it into action. Which many of us that profess to be Christian -need to learn to do.

However, it is equally true that Reverend Wright also spoke in very controversial terms that boldly stated how he see this government as it relates to his journey in this world. It is his perspective born out of his experiences that many of us, black or white may or may not totally agree or utterly condemn (depending on how his words impacted the individual) the words of this man.

I attended many churches of different denominational persuasions and watched many television ministries as well. Which why I can imagine how someone COULD stay in a church that speaks controversial issues and yet does so much good outwardly. There have been many ministers that had made controversial statements such as the Late Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Ron Parsley and John Hagee.

I will confess out of those controversial ministers I just named -I did listened faithfully to John Hagee over the years. The same minister that endorsed the republican presidential nominee, John Mccain. Pastor Hagee is a very popular and well known minister. He is a good teacher of scripture (although I have found
