According to a CNN report, more children that are American are being given prescription medications to combat the effect of autism and hyperactivity. Experts say these ADHD medicines will calm down a hyperactive child to have a better life and as I parent, I know better and sometimes these ADHD medications do far more than clam a child down.
My sixteen year old was diagnosed at the age of four and a half with attention deficit- hyperactivity disorder and for three years, we struggled with it unmediated. When he turned seven, he began the ritilian, and it sure did make him more complacent, these ADHD medications made him a walking zombie. I would learn that ADHD medications were not the magical answer.
He went from sleeping about two hours in a twenty-four hour period to sleeping 16 plus hours a day. This ADHD medication was causing more problems then it was solving with the hyperactivity, so after talking it over with his neurologist, we cut him down to half of what he was getting on a daily basis. We tried this for a few months and noticed no real difference so we cut him down to the lowest possible level and after a few months, we were still seeing the same results so we changed ADHD medications altogether.
The concerta, which is one of the other ADHD medications, also did the same thing, and I did not see any point of continually subjecting my child to this lifestyle. I did not see any benefit to my child at all with these ADHD medications.
I did what I was supposed to as a good parent and did what I could for my children but the prescription ADHD medications just did not work as they were supposed too. I did not want my child on them, so I begin looking for alternatives to the ADHD mediations.
I tried focus factor which is an herbal supplement that has shown good benefits with some ADD children, it worked great with my daughter who has ADD, but it did nothing for my son with attention deficit- hyperactivity disorder.
We did the Feingold diet, which is rumored to be very good for those with attention deficit- hyperactivity disorder, ADD and other cognitive conditions, but it did not work for us. Some of the foods helped my family, but not all of them, so we limit the artificial items, watch sugar but I used behavior modification with my children and this is what seemed to work better then ADHD medications.
