Holding a cell phone while driving, what a novel idea. Why didn't I think of that. Maybe I should encourage my own children to risk their lives by holding a cell phone instead of using both hands to drive. My response to that is, "What are you thinking? Are you nuts?" Holding a cell phone while driving is one of the most dangerous ideas that I have ever heard next to having a dog on your lap of course.
Accidents occur within seconds. Holding a cell phone lessens your response time to an occurring accident. Plus the phone may fall out of your hands and land under the brake or gas pedal, making the situation worse. I have been behind many drivers holding cell phones. They weave all over the road, drive slower especially if they are using the key pad on their phone, and many times they have trouble making a turn because both hands are not on the wheel. These are considered to be very dangerous drivers in my book. I stay as far away from them as possible.
Drivers need to be in complete control while driving at all times. Drivers needs to ensure that if an accident occurs they are fully aware of the situation and hopefully their quick thinking can save their own life. Cells phones I believe deter drivers from driving safely as they are more concerned with the person they are talking too and what the conversation entails than focusing properly on the road. I am glad that laws are being passed that ban drivers from having any hand held cell phones.
While I am not crazy about the hands free devices as the drivers attention is not completely focused on the road, these devices are welcomed if a driver must absolutely talk on the phone while driving. At least with the hand free devices, the driver can have both hands on the wheel ensuring their own safety. The only draw back with these devices is that a driver may be so focused on the conversation, they miss turns, go through red lights or stop signs, and do not pay attention to the drivers around them. While both hands are on the wheel their mind is not on the road completely. This can lead to many unnecessary disasters.
What did you parent do without cell phones? They waited till they came home to talk on the phone. Users today especially teenagers act if a cell phone is a necessity that they can not live without. It is not. A cell phone is a privilege, a very costly privilege, and should be treated as such. Whatever is said on the phone while driving can wait till that person is out of the car and in a home or office. No conversation is worth risking your own life or the lives of the other drivers on the road. Stay off of the phone while driving, PLEASE!
