Speaking and writing are equally important. A person writes as they speak. If you are not a good speaker chances are you will not be a good writer.
Every one has access to a dictionary or thesaurus. Following the basic rules of any writer using the following format: 1) Beginning, 2) Middle, 3) End, an incredible article can easily be put together if you can memorize the meaning of the elaborate words chosen. If you can't the words shouldn't be chosen.
The writer may very easily scribble down several notes and feel as though it is a masterpiece. When asked to read it, that same writer may stumble over words, mispronounce words, use the word incorrectly or bore the heck out of the listener.
If you're a Freelance writer you can fake your way until you sell that mainstream article that gets everyone's attention. In the interview you will be judged. Your credibility will come into play. Things such as, "Must have hired a ghost writer, this person can't even speak, I don't believe this was written by he/she." Doesn't necessarily mean the comments are true, it just shows that understanding, speaking and writing goes together as well as understanding, reading and writing.
To go a step further, if you are not a good speaker and are asked to publicly read your work, a chance is given to bring the article alive. The opportunity to express your feelings and clear up any misinterpretations is best handled by an equally skilled writer and speaker.
What if your article is so controversial that you are asked to sit on a panel to discuss it? Seated opposite are the "I agree" and, "Disagree" sides.
A person skilled at both speaking and writing could easily handle the situation. 1) The writer knows all of the facts and is the best source of information 2) The speaker can clearly rebut any misunderstandings eloquently with ease. The writer conveys the message on paper. The speaker brings the article to life.
On the flip side of the issue, if the article was written to get attention and in fact well written but the author is not an excellent speaker, 1)The author sits quietly while the article is picked a part 2) The author publicly ended his/her career.
Given a chance to speak about the written words gives the article a voice. It's a chance to express your feelings on the topic, share the knowledge you have on the subject and get your viewpoint across. What freelance writer wouldn't want the opportunity to speak in an effort to drive the expression home?
