Spend a day travel stop-over in Singapore, walk through streets find sites in Singapore that have Malay interest. Be immersed with how Malays practice their customs.
Start your walk along Bussorah Street, be engross by the colonial design terraces. Formerly a residential area for immigrants from Middle East and Indonesia. Long stretch of shop houses to browse for that traditional Malay costumes, artifacts, handicrafts, furniture and accessories. You find this a paradise for goods like carpets from Middle East, textiles from Europe and ready made clothes from India and China.
A tribute to Queen Victoria in 1905, Victoria Concert Hall was opened as Victoria Memorial Hall. Since 1980, became choice venue for top theatre, concert and dance performance. Performance of combined modern and traditional instruments in Malay music was held there. The repertoire by Orkestra Melayu Singapura (OMS) includes original compositions and traditional Malay pieces.
The Singapore Botanic Gardens at its present site was founded in 1859 by an Agri-Horticultural Society. The Gardens showcases many outstanding plant collections. Some highlights include the National Orchard Garden, the Ginger Garden and the Evolution Garden including many rare specimens. Traditional remedy or herbal medicine comes from various type of medical plants', either from the leaves, the fruits, the roots, the flowers or the barks, etc.
Haji Lane is a favorite spot among the teenagers and fusionists seeking a shopping experience with the bohemian feel. A creative enclave in a back alleyway, edgy shops that sell designer label fashion, accessories and gifts, and cafes and restaurants that are scattered among the old tenant mix. Walking down with walls filled with graffiti art. One generation to the other are taught fine art from home with calligraphy, embroidery and weaving.
The keris originated in Java some time around the 9th century. An asymmetrical double-edged dagger unique to the island of Southeast Asia. This weapon is associated to the silat martial art. Traditional music accentuates more on rhythm. Visit Eunos Community Centre Kompang club. Musical pieces are played to accompany certain activities or situations in a given story. Soloist and chorus sung and accompaniment of drummed rhythmic patterns create the ambiance. The playful mode of playing the drum provides a channel to release negative feelings and build co-ordination amongst players.
