Pit bulls are my favorite breed. Over the years I have raised several. My very first puppy as a child was a Boxer. That was the beginning of a life time love affair with all the very special bulldog breeds. My Boxer set the stage, preparing the way for my total enchantment with the infamous American Pit Bull. Georgia is my home state and it is also known far and wide as being "Bull-Dawg" country. If you live anywhere east of Atlanta you know our slogan is, "How bout them Dawgs." Uga is the mascot for the University of Georgia. If you're a college football fan, then I'm quite sure, you are familiar with this massive, snow-white English Bulldog. At every home game, you'll find him standing proudly on the side-lines wearing his UGA jersey.
The first priority as with any pup is to make sure all necessary shots are given to ward off rabies and disease. There are a wide variety of colors and sizes of the Pit Bull breed. Size certainly makes a difference in the way you should raise and train your particular dog. For example, the energy level of the smaller Pit Bull Terrier tends to be more hyper active. The larger dogs energy level can range from one end of the scale to the other, depending on age and handling. The Pit Bull blood lines have been mixed and intermingled over the years, so this is a factor that should definitely be taken into account.
The Staffordshire Pit Bull Terrier is the smaller breed. It ranges in weight from about twenty five to forty pounds. Short and stocky, this particular Pit Bull breed will only have a height of fourteen to sixteen inches. The coat will be smooth, short and dense. Minimal grooming is required to keep his coat in top condition. Bathe only when necessary. This dog needs plenty of regular exercise, which should consist of lots of play time and daily walks on a leash, especially in public places.
Next we have the American Pit Bull Terrier. This is an entirely different breed. It will range in size from thirty to sixty pounds, with a height of eighteen to twenty inches. Colors may include everything from brindle to red, solid black or white and everything in between. The coat is thick, short and shiny. This dog needs a substantial amount of vigorous exercise. Leash training is must. The temperament can be defined as courageous, loyal, and full of energy. This dog should be socialized at an early age to be interactive with children and other animals.
Now we are at a point where the large American Pit Bull must be discussed. The large
