The benefits of sharing the crafting experience with children

My poor niece, what a "bore her afternoon had been! She was a flower girl in a family wedding and there were nothing but adults catching up on their lives and family news.Like most kids her age, adult conversation was a bore. What was a 6th grader to do? Nothing, till her favorite Auntie had an idea!

After getting parental permission, off we went to Michael's Craft Store. Both she and I share a great and deep love of crafting. She is a bead queen, while I am more the papercraft and art type. But that didn't stop us.

We had a ball wandering around the vastness of creative aura that makes up the experience of a good craft store. We looked up and down almost every aisle. We talked and laughed about things we enjoyed. We shared ideas and projects that had worked and a few that hadn't worked at all.

We picked up a few things and headed back to her home away from home. Armed with a few paint brushes, some paint and a couple of mini canvases, we decided to make a little remembrance for the bride. What a grand time we had for a couple hours creating together. I helped out with some of the technical ends. Once I showed her a few tricks, I stepped back and let her explore and create. The process was exciting on both ends. While it wasn't perfect, it certainly was made from the heart and that made it a treasure !

I watched her excitement as she discovered a medium that she had never tried before. More than that pleasure that she received from making something with her own hands, we had the joy of spending time together.

I could relish with her the moment when she showed her project to the rest of the gathered adults. What joy to see her pride in their compliments. I know that the bride will treasure her gift.

It was a memory that will last for a long time for both of us. We both learned a few more things about each other. She had pride and pleasure in creating a gift with her own hands. The time was precious.

Want to take some time with your precious child? Take time to craft. It's an ideal way to find common ground, share and make memories together. It doesn't have to cost you an arm or a leg. Either show how to do something or explore a new idea, medium or project together.
Even if you are not too talented, there are plenty of kits to encourage your creative side.

Craft with a child today. I promise it is time well spent. You will build esteem, teach a new idea or skill, and just palin have fun.
