How to prevent your PC from being infected with spyware

by TruXter

The number one method of spyware and addware prevention is to watch and moderate your internet habits. Do not click advertisements you see on websites, unless you know they are from a known and trusted service. Such as Google. You can tell if they are from Google because it will say "Google" in the corner of the advertisements. Do not go to weird sites (some of you know what I mean). Do not just wildly install things as you find them. You always must scan them first. Do a search for "jotti" and you will find an on-line malware scanner that uses multiple scanners to check for malicious objects. Do not use administrator privileged accounts on your computer, you can change this in control panel, look at the "users" icon and open it and go through the steps you see.

For a more Mechanical approach to Internet security and privacy, let me suggest a few tools I use.
See I know that no one (ME) ever wants to worry about their computer every five seconds while they search or just simply enjoy their time with the most useful media device in their house. So I start with protecting myself from the roots. I search for a site "mvps hosts" . Mvps hosts site contains a file on it that has a list of sites for your computer to begin blocking from the first time you open your browser or do anything to access the web or anything that involves your network card. That of course is not a huge cure all but it is very amazing what the results give you. Next step in this would be to get a malware scanner, like "spybot search and destroy" or "A-Squared" or "ad-aware from lavasoft". None of these are going to spin the earth back and make your computer new again, or anything like that. They will how ever if used on a regular bases can find and identify many things that your typical virus scanner simply overlooks. All three of them give you a bit of protection by monitoring your system at a low stress level.
The third method, is use an operating system that was built for protection. Like Microsoft xp 64 bit or Microsoft Vista 64 bit. Both of those operating systems have a high level of security and authentication methods. Many people will suggest you use an Apple computer. Others suggest you use Linux. I prefer Linux because it's level of security and it's software and functionality is superior, simply because it is made by people who want something and know how to make it. It is made by the users. Besides the way it is made, Pretty much all innovation on Microsoft or mac/apple was either bought or copied from Linux over the past three years.

Surf Safe everyone.
