Reflections: Great pranks to play on people

by Pam Hectorne

Created on: May 15, 2008

Do you have someone at home who has a phone to their ear most of the time? Well, here is a prank I played on my son one evening. We all got a big laugh out of it, including him! He also learned a good lesson without me having to scold him.

My son was in high school at the time and had a girl friend. His girlfriend called daily and they would be on the phone for hours. This one particular day, dinner was ready and just as we were all sitting down to eat, the phone rang. Of course it was for him and of course it was the girlfriend. I told him not to take too long as he left the table and took the phone to his room to have a private conversation with her.

After we all finished eating dinner and his was still untouched, I came up with a brilliant plan, if I do say so myself! I removed his plate from the table and put it on the counter in the kitchen (he could not see it from the dining room). I then placed my empty plate where his plate was supposed to be and placed my dog, Chelsea in his chair. I told the dog to sit and stay. She cooperated fully. I sent my daughter into the living room because she was already laughing so hard, she could barely talk. My husband and I sat at the table and awaited my sons return.

Soon after, my son was finished with his phone call and came back into the dining room. The timing could not have been more perfect. As he walked into the dining room, the dog looked up at him, licking her lips! He saw her and then looked at his plate and looked at her again and yelled, "CHELSEA! The look on his face was priceless! Then he looked at me and said, "MOM! She ate my dinner!" He was quite upset.

I kept a straight face for as long as I could, which unfortunately, wasn't long enough. I busted up laughing as did my daughter and husband. My son, realizing I had played a prank on him, started laughing also. I got up and went into the kitchen to get his plate, as he picked up the dog and put her back on the floor.

I then told him he was lucky I had moved his plate! I told him the dog was hungry and I was going to let her eat his dinner since I had no way of knowing when he was going to get off the phone. After some discussion and much more laughter, we agreed no more phone calls during dinner. His girlfriend could wait until dinner was finished to call.

My son is now grown and married and has a son of his own. At 18 months old, my grandson has inherited my funny bone and loves to play jokes on me and his parents already. I can't wait until he is older and I can tell him about the time the dog almost ate his daddy's dinner!

We still laugh about this to this day!
