When most people consider starting up an online business, they don't take the time to consider if they will need any type of business licenses or not. Most people assume that if a business is online, there is no license needed. But, the state that you register your online will have business license requirements and you will have to follow them if you do not want to face any type of problems down the road.
Finding the right licenses isn't as hard as it sounds though. Each state has specific licensing laws that they require businesses to stick to, and these laws are normally posted on the Secretary of State's website. On each different SoS's site, the licenses that are needed for any type of business are listed and you can usually print off the license application(s) that you need to file. In some cases, you can actually fill out and file the application(s) online. If you have questions about what licenses you might need, you can always contact your Secretary of State's office and find out if there are any special licenses that might pertain to your business.
If you cannot find what you need on your state's Secretary of State site, then you can check out your state's tax commission site. The tax commission can help you find out any license requirements that your state has as well as any tax laws that will affect your business as well. Both of these sites are great to bookmark so you can check them often, and most states have online filing where you can file for licenses and do your state taxes from your home office.
Contrary to what some web sites will have you believe, you can search out and file for your business license(s) without hiring someone to do it for you. There are many sites out there that will charge you to find and file the license application, and sometimes this can cost you almost double. Of course, if you do not have the time to file the license application yourself, then you can search through some of these sites for the best price on the application fees. Usually these sites offer a deal on filing the license applications and any incorporation documents that you desire as well, so make sure that you check into them as well if you plan to do all of that at once and just don't have the time to do it yourself.
The bottom line is that you can easily find what you need to file for a business license for your online business with a few clicks. Just make sure that you take the time to find out which licenses you need and get them before you start up any type of online or offline business in your state.
