Checking in for your cruise is very easy, as long as you are prepared. A few weeks before your cruise, you will (or should) receive a packet from the cruise line. This packet will include all the necessary information you will need to board the ship. Read it. It will have very helpful tips on where you will board, when you can board, and what documents you will need.
When packing for your cruise, remember to put all your documents, including passports, into your carry on. DO NOT put them into your luggage as you will need them to board the ship.
Arriving at the pier
While some people travel from their home to the pier the same day as their cruise departs, most don't, including me. I always arrive the day before to be safe. You never know if you are going to have car trouble (if you drive to the port). If you fly, planes can and will be late or the airlines can lose your luggage. I arrive the day before so I don't miss the boat!
You can arrive at the pier by shuttle, taxi, or your own car if you are driving. As you pull into the parking area, there will be porters to take your luggage. It's VERY important you have your luggage tags filled out properly with your cabin number. If your tags did not arrive or if you need an extra one, you can get one from the porter. Tipping is expected, $1 - $2 per bag. Remember, keep your carry on with you! Once you have turned over your luggage, you will be directed where to enter the terminal. Before entering you will need to show your cruise documents, so have those out and ready as you approach the terminal.
Once inside, you will go thru Security screening (just like the airport). Your carryon must be small enough to go thru x-ray. After Security, you will be directed to one or more lines to check in for your cruise.
Checking In Process
Once at the desk, you will need to handover your paperwork, your passport and the all important credit card. A quick note at this point in time, a birth certificate and photo ID are all the is needed to board the ship. BUT, if something happens and you need to fly home, you won't be able to without a passport. If you don't have one yet, it is a good idea to go ahead and get one. Better safe than sorry. Your credit card is used to establish your shipboard account. If you are using cash, just let the clerk know and once onboard, you can set up your account at the Purser's Desk. Once checked in, the clerk will give you a card. This card will get you onto the ship, will be your charge card on the ship
