Starting Out

Landing retail sales jobs

One thing that most people do not seem to realize is that anybody can land any job they want to, as long as it does not require a specialized certification, license, or degree. While I understand that the application and interview process can be nerve racking for so many people, especially when you are competing for the same position as many other people, however, there are several key factors into learning how to land a sales job, particularly in the retail world. I, myself, have gotten jobs that I was no way near qualified for, but it was how I presented myself, and how my made my resume look that made me get the position over other people. Here are the steps that I follow:

1. Create a gorgeous, well detailed resume- One thing that an employer likes to see is that you are experienced in the working environment. Even if you may or may not have the sales background, if you put key indicator words in there such as "guiding customers into purchasing" or "using my knowledge to assist customers with" it will typically show that you have some sales skills in you. The look of the resume itself, and how detailed it is, will show the employer that you are detailed orientated, and professional. If emailing the resume, make sure that you put a cover letter in the email itself, and if attaching it to an application, make sure that you fill out the application in full detail as well.

2. Call a few days after you have sent in your application/resume- Employers are more likely to hire someone who is optimistic and excited about the position, than someone who is not. By calling, you are showing that you have not lost interest, and you are ready to take the process to the next step. Use more professional words such as "Hello, my name is _____ and I was calling in regards to the status of my application" Typically, whoever you spoke to about it will mark it down on your application that you called to do a checkup. It will also give you a heads up when your interview may be coming.

3. When landing the interview, dress up in business casual- Personally, I always dress up as business like as I can. As a woman, I use a pants suit. A skirt (at knees length or right above) and blouse, or dress pants and a blouse will suffice as well. For men, dress pants, a button up shirt, and a tie is always best. Make sure that you have some type of note pad with you, and always carry an additional copy of your resume. Try to carry a pen with you as well, which makes you seem very prepared.
