Poetry: In memory of a loved one

Sonnet For My Father

You planted the tulips late in the fall,
With knotted hands they were set in the ground,
Some in the open and some by the wall,
Working alone, you barely made a sound.

Green blades broke through the snow in early spring,
Announcing that winter would soon be through,
And always you knew the colors they'd bring,
Red, pink, and yellow with a brilliant hue.

And so, my dear Daddy, you labored on,
Bringing bright hope to us after the snow,
Not even thinking that you might be gone,
When the cold winds of winter ceased to blow.

Fourteen falls have gone since you said goodbye,
Yet in spring tulips still raise their heads high.
