A roaring fire,
fresh bread and jam
steaming hot tea
eggs sizzling in a pan?.
When I was a child,
teatime was fun
home from school
to tea and a bun.
Fresh, white bread,
fluffy and soft,
was by far the best,
especially if hot
and straight from the oven
sliced big and fat,
with strawberry jam,
we would all sit and chat.
Dad would arrive
way after tea
we would be scrubbed clean
and quite sleepy.
He would give us a kiss
and send us to bed
then sit down in peace
to rest his poor head.
He would soon perk up
and ask for his tea,
which was much more than ours
as he was hungry,
having worked all day
in the cold and the rain
so that we could enjoy
our tea-time again.

The cups and saucers
are dear to my heart.
