Biography: Harrison Ford

was cast, but backed out of the deal when he was offered the Magnum P.I. role. Spielberg again suggested Ford would be perfect for the role and thankfully, this time, Lucas listened. Now, in the hearts and minds of many fans, there is no one who could replace Ford as Indiana.

Throughout his career, Ford has starred in dozens of movies. Force 10 from Navarone (1978), Witness (1985), The Mosquito Coast (1986), The Fugitive (1993) and K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) are just a few.

Two of his characters returned to the big screen in sequels. Han Sola starred in Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983).

The role Ford is most famous for, Indiana Jones, returned in The Temple of Doom (1984) and the Last Crusade (1989). The fourth installment of the series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, opens May 22, 2008.

Many reasons can be given for the success of the Indiana Jones character, but at the root is Ford. His down-to-earth wit, dry humour and rugged good looks have taken the adventurous archeologist to heights Selleck could never have reached. Ford's ability and willingness to perform most of the difficult stunts needed to create the action-packed movies add to the realism and thrill.

One of the funniest and unexpected scenes in movie history is the famous sword fight in Raiders of the Ark. Indiana encounters a sword-wielding enemy and although the fight was supposed to go on for several minutes, it ended abruptly when Indiana nonchalantly pulls his revolver and shoots the sword-fighter. Ford had suggested the shortening of the scene because he wasn't feeling well after eating local food. These are the moments Ford fans will remember long after the curtains close.

Time after time, Ford has captivated his fans with his no-nonsense style. Fans expect to see a believable character when they attend a Ford movie and Ford delivers.

Although some stars make a name for themselves in movies filled with senseless violence and sex, Ford has always been above that. This is more evident now since he can pick and choose the movies he wishes to make.

Fans have their favourite Ford movies and characters, and so does Ford. His most favourite character is Indiana Jones. His favourite movie is The Mosquito Coast. In this movie, like in Witness, Ford enjoyed being able to use his real-life skills as a carpenter. Ford's favourite actors are Gregory Peck and Gary Cooper.

When it comes to salaries, Ford is up there
