God, the concept of a higher power who is beholden to no other, and to whom humans look for spiritual strength and forgiveness, is as relevant today as the first time the idea of a higher power twinkled into the consciousness of an ancient being.
We have created complex religions to support worship of God, each one sacred to many who find solace in their religion and alienation from others. Religions have manifest as a language of worship. Each religion serves as the belief system for millions of people, who would otherwise struggle alone in their darkest hours. Belief in God, given a common language through their unique religion, allows peace and hope to escort them through struggle. It's not about religion, it's about access to God. We all need access to God.
In an everyday world, human beings take on every nuance of good and bad. Men and women of power and aggression share the world with those who are not, and bad things do happen to good people. God is relevant to every person of every behavior for their deepest spiritual need.
We have evidence of worship to gods and goddesses from as long ago as it is possible for us to identify human habitation. The need to look to a higher power whose universe in which we live and frequently regard with wonder is very strong. The harder the life we are living, the more we need spiritual support from other than those who are part of our everyday lives. We need a higher power that is without qualities that are subject to manipulation by those we don't trust, or who are actively aggressive toward us. God is relevant.
Left to the laws of the jungle, humankind would become as much a part of it as any other predator. We are predators. The strongest against the weakest in every way would be the way of the world. There would be no hope for the next generation to ever lift themselves out of the persistent raw struggle to expand their finer and more precious qualities.
The old west was a teeming chaos of power struggles for wealth and glory until people who believed in God made their way there. They established communities of worship and transformed the west. Ordinary people could move there and expect to live a good life with their family reasonably distanced from the raw struggles that preceded them. God was a relevant part of establishing this country, and is still relevant.
God is perhaps more relevant now than ever. In view of our scientific explorations and technological successes, we live in a world with more and more things and less and less contact with the natural world toward which we bend. Access to God and the knowledge we can experience spiritual reward when we most need it is more important than ever. God is relevant.
