The Mountains
"Grandpa Hutch, let's go to the shore..." tickles my ears like the endless cry of waves splashing against gritty sand, and I want to say, for the sake of my children, the beach outweighs the mountains for a summer vacation destination. How can one beat the Grandpa special sand hole deep enough to fit a five year old, the wave rocket blasting child into the air via grandpa hands, as every wave explods upon sand, or the endless boardwalk treats, and Gram's favorite pizza joint. Not to mention the crabbing, and picturesque bay waters, bike rides, boat rides and wild ponies, go-carts and golf carts, oh my, the kids are in heaven.
As the sun recedes, reddened skin appears like a fresh lobster from boiling water and gooey aloe globs are ready to rub in, and it seems that's where heaven ends. Sticky sand and scratchy waters, not to mention sand crumbling from bathing suit bottoms as they're slipped off to rinse the hot crusty sunburnt body, is more than enough to keep me away. A full successful day at the beach knocks the wind out of the body, especially with young children, so forget any night time energy.
Sorry kids, G-pa and G-ma make cute sand castles and all, but for the sake of an all around enjoyable vacation, the mountains far outweigh the shore for a summer vacation destination.
It's the mountains that offer continuous amounts of energy, inspiration, and endless outdoor opportunities. The options seem limitless, not to mention the serenity and peaceful views of possible snow capped peaks. By the way, many mountain vacation towns are imprinted with lakes and possible beaches, but that is not where it ends.
For the outdoors man, the mountains offer hiking for all levels, mountain biking, fishing, camping, and stunning jogging trails. The nature lover will indulge in an abundance of wild flowers, wild life, and vegetation. The thrill seeker has the possibilities to enjoy, to name a few: rock climbing, sky diving, para gliding, and off road excursions. On top of that, it's perfect inspiration for the artist in all, whether that be painting, photography, writing, or knitting. Of course, for the one who enjoys the occasional pampering, spa options seem numerous.
Don't think for a minute you have to put in sweat equity to enjoy the mountains. Some of my best mountain moments include sipping wine on a comfy chair gazing about my surroundings.
My children may love the beach spending quality time with grandparents, but they also yearn for camping trips and hiking in the woods. Both vacations offer an abundance of learning experiences and memories; however, the mountains have my heart.
