Charity, it is something that we all feel is something that has to come from our heart and soul. We also feel that charity in general is something that we can afford to give to who or what when we feel that we are capable of giving it. When it comes to giving to a charity whether it be religious or personal we have always felt that it is something that we have to want to do not be compelled to do based on someone else's sense of morality.
Most people are taught that charity starts at home. For the most part that is true due to the fact that with out the mentality associated with charity we cannot flourish at home, at work or in our daily lives. With organized charitable giving we get to choose whether it goes to a religious organization, preferred medical or social charity it has always been a given that it be a personal choice for where we give our charity and how we give our charity.
To make it compulsory takes the charity out of the act of giving and once we no longer have the option to be charitable in our own way we become forced to select from a set of charitable organizations who may not share the same views that we feel are needed in any type of charitable organization regardless of type of organization. Every time we allow ourselves to be told how we dispense our time, efforts or money we are giving a piece of ourselves up to fit into a small box that can be easily categorized by others who have no business in our personal business.
Those people who would compel us to be charitable should be treated the same as they would have us treated in any situation that they wish to compel us especially when it comes to being charitable. When you look at whether they are being charitable the way they would have everyone else be charitable you may be surprised by the fact that many if not all of them may not be as charitable as they would have you believe. We live in a society where people tend to believe that it is okay for them to do something that is voluntary but it should be compulsory for everyone else.
Charity should stay voluntary at least in the sense of organized charity since we all have our own personal reasons on whether or not we give and where we choose to give. Charity at home is mostly a private matter but at the same time there is a real need to be charitable at least when it comes to dealing with others in the home or community. In the home the greatest charity can be friendship, raising a family, being there for someone who has no one to be there for them or making sure that they stay active in a positive way.
