Memoirs: Divorce experiences

The dictionary defines the word Divorce as to split, to separate. The word itself brings so many feelings and ideas a long with it that we can all relate to even if we have never been through a divorce or know anybody who was, but hey let's face it. In this day and age either we have or we know somebody who has.

My Mother and My father married after a short time of knowing eachother. Their marriage produced two children. My sister and I. Jo-Ann and Jose. They were together for a very long time before they got divorced. They fought for their marriage the whole time until they had to give up and walk away. It wasn't easy for either one of them. Eventually they became friends again. They would fight every once in awhile, but for the most part it was friends. I often wanted them to get back together. I used to think about it a lot.

My father remarried Catherine Cochrane when I was still in elementary school. We were driving down the road the first time he showed me the picture of her. My sister and I had an instant reaction. Negative. We both loved our mother very much and didn't want this new woman in our lives. Especially since my dad had just popped out of the blue that they were getting married.

When we met her for the first time we saw that she wasn't like anything we had thought. She was very nice with a warm smile. Brown hair. She was beautiful. She worked at a department store. We even thought we would criticize that. She was obviously snooty. She already had two children of her own. We would criticize them too.

After living together for awhile we all started to get along. Live together. Plans were being made. Things for our future. Chrismas' birthdays.

Gene was deaf and very old for his age. Jill was in High School. We would play with Gene. He came up with the most bizarre games. Run down the hallway with all the lights out to chase me. It was a very dangerous game of tag. With all the lights out who knew where who was.

It all happened so fast for us. From the Ceremony to the final closing of the door. When they were not together anymore and we were off to live with our dad again.

When I was at a wedding I overheard a guest say "Too bad it won't last" Everybody turned when she said that and she said "I'm sorry. I'm from California."

I've had more than my share of relationships go bad and it's never easy. Even when you are best friends it's not easy. You still love eachother and want to be together but you know what the cycle is and that you don't want to run around like that anymore. You just want to catch your breath.

When people are together and can't be together anymore theyget divorced.

That's what the word Divorce should mean.

Catch your breath.
