"What in the world is so funny?!" That is usually the words that come out of my father's mouth every time I tell my mother a joke. My mom has the best sense of humor in the world, and I believe that's exactly where I get it from. I'd like to think that I have a great sense of humor. I try to find something that is funny and laugh at least once a day. My main audience has always been my mother. She thought EVERYTHING was funny! She still does to this day. As for my father, well, he doesn't laugh quite as much. But I did catch him chuckling a little bit after one of my many silly jokes.
I think that being funny can't be taught. It's something that comes from within. But every comedian faces challenges everyday with an audience. Some people like it, and some people don't. That's just the way life is; but, you can't please everyone. Many people have a different sense of humor from some people.
But all that aside, let's talk about what makes something funny. There are two groups of people and what they think is funny. There are the people that think pain is hysterical, and some do not. Then there are the types of people that find mindless jokes or "puns" amusing. I myself am the "pun joker."
Now for those of you that don't know what a pun is, I'll explain it to you. A pun is essentially a "play on words." An example of this is, "Oh its so chilly outside! I better go run in and get a bowl!" In this example the word "chilly" refers to the dish "chili."
As for the people that find pain amusing, well, there is a show on the ABC network called "America's Funniest Home Videos" which shows various people getting hurt and the audience votes on which video they think is the funniest. The people that think pain is amusing will love this show. As for me, I don't like it that much because that is not the type of things that I think are funny.
What essentially makes a good joke is relating to the audience. Many people have similar experiences and the comedian takes his or her own experiences and puts it in the form of a joke. There is this one comedian that is also a ventriloquist and he talks about marriage and his family. People can relate to the "nagging wife" and the "terrible children" so they think that it is funny.
In any case, like I stated earlier, there are two types of people, one is the type that thinks pain is funny, and the other is the "pun joker" like me. Well, I hope you enjoyed this segment, and I hope that it gives aspiring comedians a little bit of insight.
